âWhere the fuck are ya, Adelyn?â Khan asked once I was fully manifested in this fantasy dream land of ours. I had tried to look into how and why this was happening with us, but I came up pretty empty handed, especially with everything else that needed my attention in the waking world.
âIâm in Dahliaâs room.â
He lifted an eyebrow. âWhatâre ya doinâ there? Is she okay?â
I shrugged. âWe lost another family member today, Sam, and she took it really hard. I walked in on her curled up on the floor, in a state that I never even couldâve imagined her in. Once I comforted her, she asked if I could stay to help her through her night terrors, and I said I would. Lillyâs here too to help.â
âShe would take Samâs death hard,â he said quietly. âIâm glad youâre there for her, Addy. Those night terrors are really no joke. I once saw her try to take on one herself, and she was laid up in bed for a week. Thank God her father wasnât alive for that, or he woulda beat her for being lazy like that.â
I harrumphed. The more I heard about Dougal Malloy, the less I liked the man and was glad I would never have to meet him. Unless, of course, there was an afterlife, but I would deal with that when that came about.
Khan wrapped his arms around me and held me close, pressing a kiss to my forehead.
âThank ya for beinâ there for her when I canât be.â He pressed another kiss to my cheek. âI canât tell ya how much that means to me, Addy.â
His arms tightened around me. I wiggled in his arms until I looked up at him. There was something about the look in his eyesâ¦
âWhatâs wrong?â
He glanced away. âNothinâ really. I have people here who are takinâ care of me and tryinâ to help me. Ya have people there doinâ the same for ya. But with all that care and support and help, Iâm still stuck on the other side of the fuckinâ world from ya, and it feels like Iâm nowhere close to gettinâ back to ya.â
I lifted a hand to cup his cheek. He leaned into my touch and closed his eyes slightly.
âYou know I miss you so fucking bad, Khan,â I whispered. âWeâre lucky that we get to see each other in whatever dream world this is, but I know itâs not the same. And I know that it wonât be until I can hold you in my arms when Iâm fully awake. I hope it wonât take much longer, but everyoneâs doing their best. I will hold you again, you will kiss me again, you understand?â
He nodded, meeting my gaze once more. âDo ya,â he started, but his voice faltered. âDo ya mind if I just hold ya tonight, love?â
âI would love nothing more.â
I smiled and tucked my head under his chin, and we stayed that way until we both woke up to our real responsibilities.
